What comes to mind when you hear people talking about The Netherlands? Tulips, windmills, cheese, clogs? Do you want to know what’s true and what’s more to discover? Then the New Year’s event “Dutch for Dummies – Traditions Now and Then” by AEGEE-Utrecht is the right place for you. From 28th of December 2015 till 2nd of January 2016 the Dutch antenna will offer you an amazing programme. Organiser Aicha de Hesselle told the Golden Times readers seven reasons why you cannot miss this event.
1. Utrecht
Our city was voted “most beautiful canal city in Europe”! See the famous Domtoren and walk by the beautiful canal in the city centre. We’ll make sure that you visit all the hotspots of this city.
2. The Beer Cantus
Our Beer Cantus is all about singing songs while drinking beer alongside a long table. But be careful, if you don’t sing the lyrics correctly some punishment may await you…
3. Amsterdam
During our event we will also visit this amazing capital where you will experience it’s beautiful canals, see the famous flower market, taste some Dutch cheese… You really can’t go to The Netherlands without visiting Amsterdam!
4. Sinterklaas
On the last night of our event we’ll let you experience a typical Dutch tradition called “Sinterklaas”. During this festivity we give each other presents, write poems and eat the delicious “pepernoten”.
5. New Year’s Eve
Don’t forget the main reason you want to join our event: to celebrate the New Year! Like a real Dutchie you’ll light some fireworks together with us and watch it blow into the sky, together with all the other citizens!
6. Typical Dutch Games
If you want to experience typical Dutch traditions then this one might be one for you. This game is called “Koekhappen”, which literally means “biting into a cookie”. The cakes hanging are gingerbreads, and the aim of the game is to try to eat as many cakes without using your hands when they are hanging in the air.
7. Stroopwafels
If there is one thing you cannot forget to eat during your stay in The Netherlands it’s this delicious waffle, filled up with sweet caramel syrup. You won’t be able to resist eating a second one!
