In November the Golden Times published AEGEE’s first Facebook charts. The result: AEGEE-Baki, AEGEE-Catania and AEGEE-Salerno were the antennae with most Facebook fans. On 6th of January we had a new look. Many antennae managed to improve the numbers of the followers of their Facebook page, especially some locals in Italy. Here are the main results.

1. AEGEE-Baki is still far ahead of the others

  • With 5825 fans AEGEE-Baki’s Facebook page has still by far the most fans. Since November, the number increased by 145 fans.
  • In order to be in the top ten, an antenna needs more than 2400 Facebook fans. In November, 2200 were sufficient.
  • For being in the top 40, in November 1011 fans were sufficient. Now an antenna needs 1124. Among the top 40 is with AEGEE-Avellino-Benevento a deleted antenna – on 21st place. In November they were still on the 16th rank.
  • One antenna is new in the top 10: AEGEE-Barcelona with 2572 fans on 8th place. In November, the antenna just switched from a personal Facebook profile to a  Facebook page and converted their friends into fans.
  • There are no changes in the top 7.
  • Most of the top ten are in the Southern part of Europe: three are in Italy, three in Spain, two in the Caucasus region, and one each in Malta and Hungary. Possible explanation: it might be that AEGEE members there are easier ready to become a fan on Facebook.
  • With AEGEE-Budapest only one of the ten largest antennae of the network is among the locals with most Facebook fans.
  • Despite the large number of fans, none of the top ten pages don’t manage to engage their fans very much (see “talking about” column. Small remark about the “talking about” number in the picture: Facebook gives a figure for the level of interaction and engagement with a page. This number is very volatile: if nothing is posted for a few weeks, people will not check the page and the “talking about” figure gets low very quickly. Obviously at the end of the year not many new posts or topics were offered.

2. The rising stars

  • Two antennae dominate the list of locals who gained most new Facebook fans since November: AEGEE-Barcelona and AEGEE-Thessaloniki. This is not a surprise, since both converted a personal Facebook profile into a Facebook fan page.
  • Three of the ten antennae with the biggest increase are Italian locals. In general, the Italian Facebook pages experienced a big increase in popularity.

Rising stars3. Pages versus personal profiles

  • Facebook does not like it when organisations use personal profiles instead of fan pages. In AEGEE, most antennae use fan pages – although both concepts have their pros and cons.
  • Currently 165 AEGEE locals have an own Facebook page, including 11 dead antennae
  • Around 60 of these 165 have also a personal name account for the local, some of them are not in use anymore, others use it quite a lot in parallel to the Facebook fan page.
  • 19 locals have a personal profile account instead of a fan page. And the rest – 13 locals – have neither a page nor a personal profile account.

4. Let’s talk about…

  • Currently zero pages have three-digit numbers for the level of engagement. This is probably due to the Christmas and New Year time, but even then it is rather low
  • Only one of the most-talked about ten antennae, AEGEE-Cagliari, actually belongs to the ten bigggest antennae of the network.
  • Smaller antennae do often use this PR tool more efficient than the big ones. Especially Polish antennae are very good at this: three of them are in the current top ten of most talked-about locals, due to frequent reports and pictures about local activities
  • 114 locals with a page currently engage ten or less people. This is very low.TalkingaboutFB

5. Fans of the biggest antennae

  • Like in November, two of the ten biggest antennae do not have a Facebook page, but use a personal profile page. The other eight, in alphabetical order, with the number of fans and engagement, are listed in the picture.
  • In general: the number of Facebook fans of the ten biggest antennae is high, but the level of engagement is quite low, considering that all of these locals have more than 150 members.
